December 2008 |
| We
have a New Champion....
All Hail Sir 3rd a Lot,
who is now Sir 1st For Once!! Well done to Nathan, who
just goes to prove that you don't need the newest car
on the market to be the best at the Club .
Mind you it was very close in F1, with only one point
in it - but that's all it takes! Well done to Charlie
Ware for a great run into third place. Stuart, Dave
and Rob all suffered with car problems during the championship
so fell out of contention and poor John comes back to
challenge Nathan, only to break his thumb this morning
- hope it heals quickly John.
F2 was just as closely
contested, although Kris always looked favourite to
win, in the end it was just by 2 points from Colin,
who just piped Mark to the 2nd place by a single point
after tonight's racing - sorry Mark! Adam Burgess always
looked strong pick up a "podium" place, but
just lost out by a single point at the end.
F3 was also very tightly
contested throughout the series, but Andy was always
strong and ended with a clear win, leaving Jamie, Alex
and Luke to battle for 2nd and 3rd place. At the end,
Jamie and Alex ended on equal points, with Jamie taking
2nd place on countback.
And of course well done
to everyone, for what has been a fun and exciting Championship
Series, and some of the closest finishes we've ever
seen.
So, just to conclude -
who won what.....

Most
Improved Junior
We haven't awarded this
for a couple of years, but decided that an extra trophy
would be awarded at the end of this year, for the "Most
Improved Junior -
2008", as a way of recognising
the hard work and perseverance that our younger drivers
bring to the Club.
It's never easy to decide
who to award this to, but on balance we decided to award
it to Lee Henson,
who despite lots of set-backs during the year with breakages,
or qualifying position, continues to stay positive and
keep trying - so well done Lee, stick at it and the
results will come I'm sure!
Most
Courteous
Driver
We said at the start of
the series, that we would present a large Hudy set-up
board (donated by Charlie Ware) to the most courteous
driver, and Mike Smith was to be the "independent"
judge of this. Well, the final decision is that this
should go to Adam Burgess - so well done. |
| 14th
November 2008 |
| Well, there were plenty
of points on offer tonight with a few of the regulars
missing and one or two drivers suffering from breakages.
Adam Burgess was the driver to make the most of things,
qualifying in the A final and then getting two 3rd places
has helped him shrink the gap to Kris Irons in his bid
for the lead of F2. Andy Love had a good run as well,
and now has the effective lead of F3, with only one
point dropped over 8 rounds .
Nathan is still sitting on top of the Club table and
F1, but he really needs to pull out all the stops while
John is out of action for the next couple of weeks if
he wants to stay there and 2nd behind Dan just isn't
going to cut it!

Another week of very close
racing tonight with a few drivers left out of their
usual qualifying positions due either their problems
or others good luck
Race
Results >>
We've now started updating
driver abilities based on your results, so some drivers
will start to see their qualifying positions change.
Of course there may be one or two drivers who have still
only managed one weeks racing, so if you feel that you
are well outside where you should be qualifying next
week, then let race control know.
Championship

Thanks....
...to those drivers
who stayed behind tonight to help pack away, but it
was disappointing that so many people left before the
end and were not there to help pack away. Remember,
it's your Club and everyone needs to take responsibility
for track setup and putting away.
Little
Black Book
As part of our looking
for the Most Courteous Driver, John Fillingham has started
a "little black book" (well a large black
folder anyway!) in which drivers each week will be encouraged
to give one of their fellow racers either a "tick"or
a "cross" based on how courteous or discourteous
your fellow racers have been either during the race,
or when marshalling your race.
We don't want anyone to
be upset by this, and it is meant to be a bit of fun,
while giving everyone the opportunity to see what your
fellow racers think of your driving! If anyone feels
worried or bothered by any of this, please let race
control know, as the last thing we want is anyone feeling
picked on or bullied.
We hope to publish some
of the results in future weeks.
Personal
Transponders
We now have some MRT personal
transponders, which we are selling to Club Members for
£35 each. If you want one, see Colin on a Friday
night. |

| Close
Racing......
Well tonight's 1st round
of the Autumn Championship just showed how close racing
has become at the Club, with everyone trying hard to
improve at every level, and you can't afford to make
any mistakes against the faster drivers or you'll get
left behind .
Results
Unfortunately, the memory
stick has been "misplaced", so I can't post
tonight's results, or the first round of the Championship,
so these will have to be put up next week - sorry!
Most
Courteous Driver?
Do you care what other
drivers think about how well you drive? Well Charlie
and Steve Ware do, and to prove the point, Charlie's
donated a large Hudy set-up board which will be presented
to the "Most Courteous Driver" at the end
of the Autumn Series. To keep at least a degree of independence,
Mike Smith will be the main judge of this over the next
eight weeks.
So what makes a courteous
driver? Well here are just a few thoughts;
- Not shouting at other
drivers while you are on the rostrum
- Waiting patiently for
a marshall to get to your car
- Not shouting at the
marshalls
- Moving quickly out of
the way of faster drivers during qualifying
- Waiting for another
driver to recover after a "collision"
- Being out ready to marshall
quickly after your race
- Staying attentive while
marshalling
- Being quick to marshall
crashed cars
and I'm sure there's plenty
more...... |

Autumn
2008 Championship Series
If you are interested in
contributing to a discussion about the next championship,
head on over to the Club
Forum on RC RaceChat and let us know
your views. In particular, we'd like to know which are
your favourite 4 track designs so that we can chose
some in advance of the series starting!
Personal
Transponders
If anyone is thinking they
would like to avoid the hassle of remembering to pick
up a transponder each race, then why not invest in a
PT? We have tried the MRT personal transponders, each
of which has 20 different numbers that can be set to
avoid any duplication with another driver, and they
work perfectly well with our lap counting equipment
and they are a lot cheaper than the AMBrc units. We
would probably be able to sell on the MRT units at £35
each, whereas the AMBrc ones would be more in the region
of £70 each!
Anyone interested should
see Colin and let him know so we can judge if it's worth
us buying a bulk set (10) or not. |

Autumn
2008 Championship Series
Now we are over the holiday
season, numbers should start getting back to normal
and it's time to start thinking about the Autumn Series!
The Autumn Championship will start on Friday
17th October, running for 8 weeks until Friday 5th December.
Best 5 results will count towards your final score,
so you can drop your worst 3 runs, or simply miss 3
of the weeks!
The format of racing will
be the same as every Friday, with 2 x 3 minute qualifiers
and 2 x 5 minute finals - not quite sure how we will
do the scoring just yet - more to follow on that shortly!
As for the Spring Series,
we will allow any pre-glued slick tyre or any treaded
rubber tyre. However, for F1 drivers we will be insisting
on a control tyre of the STCC tyres and we would encourage
all other drivers to use this tyre as a preference.
To help with this, the Club will be selling sets of
STCC tyres at £17.50 for four tyres, a saving
of £6 off the normal web price (Thanks Mike!).
Any Stock motor, or 13.5T
(or greater) Brushless motor will be allowed for the
Championship, as of course will LiPo batteries. A minimum
weight of 1500g will be rigidly enforced, especially
for those running LiPo cells.
Cars will be scrutineered
(especially weight) during the series, just to check
everyone is playing fair!
At
the end of the series, there will be winners for each
of F1, F2 and F3 - so everyone has the chance of a trophy.
Formula’s
The formula’s have
been updated slightly to take into account new drivers,
and you can check out the link below to see who's where:
Club
Formula's >>
The Championship is a good
opportunity to show how well your driving has improved
during the year, and everyone's "ability"
levels will be re-assessed during the series which may
influence where you start in the qualifying heats on
a Friday. It will also be an opportunity to move up
a formula if you do well enough! |
| 8th
August 2008 |
Track 19 is a great track,
but being a fast one it always seems to tempt everyone to
drive that bit harder and faster into the corners and combined
with any "robust" driving (you know who I mean Tom
),
it does tend to generate a bit more damage. That aside, if
you can keep the car off the track markers and away from other
cars, you can really set a high number of laps, as John and
Dan showed with 36 laps each!

| THANK
YOU!

What more can I say, I really
appreciate everyone taking 10 minutes to help pack away tonight,
it really made a huge difference and we must have had the
fastest track clear away on record. Having this sort of help
makes such a difference to those of us who can't leave until
everything is away and locked up and certainly I went home
feeling a lot less stressed than normal, even after a pretty
bad nights racing

typical, you buy a lovely new car, get it built and race

| Welcome

Before I start with this weeks
update, I just want to say hello to the three new drivers
who came along last night, it sounds like you have nearly
got your cars ready to run and we look forward to seeing out
on track on the next few weeks
Racing....
...so, what
was going on with the racing this week - can't even use
the track as an excuse! Of course, I shouldn't pick out
anyone for special comment, but TOM WHAT WERE YOU DOING
IN QUALIFYING
(had to put that in didn't I - the power of being the
website editor!). No seriously, well done Tom for qualifying
in the A Final, and although you only managed last place
,
Dave and I didn't mind being deposed to the B final ,
we'll just get you next week! |
 |
A couple of mentions though for
good drives this week - Sam Robinson in the D Final, put in
runs that wouldn't have looked out of place in the B Final,
and the same is true of Dan Mayes stuck in the C Final. Scott
Westbury also looked very quick, just got to string it all
together for 5 minutes!

Hey - guess what, I found some
smiley's to use!!
Spring
Series
Well, just one week to go now
in the championship, and it looks like John has got F1 wrapped
up from Dan, but it's going to be down to the last round for
third place with just two points between Rob and Nathan.
It looks like Charlie will take
the F2 win, but can Dan Mayes make up enough points in time
to take the win?
F3 looks to belong to John Guiver,
with Adam in second and Stephen in a secure 3rd.
We'll see how it all ends next
week!

| .........and
thus normality is returned to the Club, with John and Dan
now sharing top spot in the Championship!
We seem to be on a run of trying
out tracks that we haven't run for a while, and this week
we tried Track 17 again - and now I remember why it is we
haven't run it for a while - I must get hold of the track
file next week and hide the other less popular tracks as well!
That said, I have to concede
that there were a couple of really good runs from both Dan
Mayes and Charlie Ware, placing them both in the A Final,
and consigning F1 drivers into the B and C Finals. Just two
more weeks of the Championship to go, but that's still plenty
of time to get some extra points!

| So this week it's
Nathan's turn to bask in the glory of Championship leader,
after problem runs for Dan and John! It was an interesting
choice of track tonight and not one that we've used much before,
and it proved to be something of an unforgiving track with
quite a few casualties as a result. I think this is one that
we consign to the "do not use" category in future!

Yes, I'm talking about championship
positions and after eight rounds, Dave is in 1st place overall,
just a point above Nathan. Some great drives worth mentioning
as well though are Dan Mayes with a superb run tonight in
the A Final; Adam Burgess who's really starting to get the
hang of his car with a great run in the B Final; Stephen Williams
with two great runs in the C Final; and Luke Overson with

Series 2008
A small change of plan has been
decided on regarding the start date, and we will now be starting
the Spring Series on Friday 25th April and running for eight
weeks until Friday 13th June - which gives everyone another
couple of weeks to get some practice in before we start! |

Spring
Series 2008
The Spring Series starts next
week, but that doesn't change anything as far a racing is
concerened, anyone can still come and race whether you can
make enough meetings to count, or not!
A bit different scoring wil be
in place this year - see below. Don't worry if it seems complicated
at all, it will make sense as we go along - I hope! |

Don't forget, that there will
not be any racing on Good Friday, 21st March.
Spring
Series 2008
The Spring 2008 Championship
Series will start on Friday 4th April, running for 8 weeks
until Friday 23rd May. The format of racing will remain the
same as every Friday, with 2 x 3 minute qualifiers and 2 x
5 minute finals, however scoring will be slightly different
this time, where only the results from the finals will count.
This will give everyone a maximum of 16 final results, of
which your best 10 will count towards your final score. This
means you can drop your worst 6 finals, or miss up to 3 weeks!
It doesn’t matter if you
can’t complete 10 finals, everyone can still come and
race – even though the Championship is running, race
nights are still open to everyone and you’ll always
be racing in your normal heat because we still want the evening
to be fun.
Tyre’s
/ Motors, etc.
For this Championship, any pre-glued
slick tyre is allowed, or any treaded rubber tyre. However,
for F1 drivers we will be insisting on a control tyre of the
STCC tyres and we would encourage all other drivers to use
this tyre as a preference. To help with this, the Club will
be selling sets of STCC tyres at £17 for four tyres,
a saving of £6.50 off the normal web price (Thanks Mike!).
Additive is allowed, provided
it is from a “pad-dispenser” device to avoid spillages.
Any Stock motor, or 13.5T (or greater) Brushless motor will
be allowed for the Championship, as will LiPo batteries. A
minimum weight of 1500g will be enforced however, especially
for those running LiPo cells.
Cars will be scrutineered (especially
weight) during the series, just to check everyone is playing
fair!
Formula’s
We will be using the formula’s
which were decided after the end of 2007 Championships
2008
Formula's >>
At the end of the series, there
will be winners for each of F1, F2 and F3 - so everyone has
the chance of a trophy.
Races will still be sorted based
on your “ability” as we normally do and your ability
will be automatically updated during the series based on your
performance – so this is your chance to change which
qualifiers you usually run in on a Friday!

Tyre
Update
The past few weeks have seen
quite a bit of testing of various pre-glued tyres on the new
carpet.
So far, the following obs-ervations
have been made:
| VTEC
24r |
- Give good
grip, possibly too much and can roll faster drivers.
Maybe the best tyre for beginners |
| CS27 |
- Good grip, look to have
reasonable wear rate |
| STCC Tyre |
- Good grip, look to have
reasonable wear rate, don't seem to change much in level
of grip during race |
| BRCA RP30 |
- Less grip than the CS27,
and can make the car a bit twitchy/ inconsistent |
| Sweep 32 |
- Too little grip to be
used realistically on this carpet |
Overall, a good tyre with consistent
levels of grip and what looks like fairly low wear would seem
to be the STCC Tyre from Mike Smith, and we will probably
settle on this as the control tyre for F1's at least. |

Setup Required?
First of all, thanks to everyone
who got there a bit earlier tonight to help with sorting out
the new carpet, it was impressive that we managed to get racing
only around 15minutes after we normally start.
I think the general view was
that the new carpet is really great, but will certainly require
some set-up changes to cars and driving style to make the
most of it. Tyres are probably going to be the one area to
focus on, so for the next few weeks we will be allowing testing
of various tyres so we can try and see which works best with
this carpet.

| Carpet's
here!
OK, the carpet's arrived and
we'll be taking it to the hall tomorrow night, so please try
to come along a little earlier so you can help set the track
out, as we have to cut it to length before we can tape down
and lay out the track markers, so extra hands will always
be useful before we get racing! |

| New
Carpet!!!
The time has finally come for
us to replace our carpet, with some nice new PrimaTrack GT.
So I will be ordering it next week, and hopefully we will
have it for Friday night! Check back here, or on the Club
forum later in the week to see if it has arrived.
It would be great if folks could
come along as early as possible next Friday if we do get the
new carpet, as we will need to get it up to the hall, and
then cut it to length - so all help to set out the track and
race control will be welcome.

| Three weeks into
the New Year, and it seems folks have been "investing".
John and Dan have both got new rides, and there are at least
3 drivers with brushless systems and more to come. We are
not seeing huge differences with brushless yet, with John
(13.5 brushless), Dan (brushed) and Charlie (15.5 brushless)
all looking very evenly matched in the A final. I was amazed
to see this week that Stuart was running LiPo cells and needed
to add 220g of lead to bring the car back to 1500g
Mind you this added weight made virtually no difference to
his lap times, as he ran light in the first leg of the finals
and then at 1500g in the second leg and he claimed he had
the gearing wrong for the 2nd leg!

| Happy
New Year!
And welcome back to a new year
of racing and fun! A great start (for some anyway!) tonight
with some fast and very close racing. A couple of people are
trying out brushless motors and also new LiPo cells, so we'll
be keeping an eye on these to see how competitive they are
and if we need to modify any rules, so watch this space.
Results for tonight and for the
14th December can now be found in the results section:

BRCA
/ Club Membership 2008
A lot of people have already
paid their Club and BRCA membership fees as these are now
due. The BRCA membership has stayed the same at £12
for 2008, and we have kept the Club membership to just £3,
so that it only costs £15, the same as 2007, to renew
your Club & BRCA membership - so hopefully that's not
too painful. If you haven't paid yet, see Nicola on a race
night.
Formula's
for 2008
Based on the placing's from the
Spring and Autumn Championships in 2007, we have now reviewed
everyone's performance and adjusted a couple of peoples formula
grading's. These are Simon Phillips, who moves up into F1,
after winning the F2 Autumn Champs, and Mark Phillips, who
moves up to F2. Well done to you both, but don't forget that
formula's"can go down as well as up", so keep up
the hard work!
