End of Championship Series....

....and Congratulations to John Fillingham who wins his fifth Championship in succession!

Mind you it was a close run thing at the end of the night for F1. Dan took FTQ, but then John won the 1st leg of the finals. John got past Dan in the 2nd final after around 3mins and then Dan was practically touching Johns bumper in some corners. Last lap, Dan just touches John and goes through. But Dan being a gentleman racer waited for John to recover and handed the win to him. If Dan had managed to take the 2nd leg, he would have won 1st place in the championship!

In F2, Simon Phillips cleared off in both finals and took two wins to secure 1st overall, even though he had only qualified in 3rd in the B final. Tom qualified 1st in the B, in front of Charlie, leaving the points tied going into the finals. First lap of leg one and a mighty coming together left Tom on his roof, Charlie limped away from the crash, but was forced to retire after 2 laps. Tom rejoined and worked his way back to second. Leg 2 saw a gap where Charlie should have been, meaning Tom had second place in F2 secured by just one point!

F3 saw Daniel Guiver return after a few weeks away, and although he qualified in the B Final, he couldn't complete 5 rounds of the championship, so was not going to be in contention for an F3 placing. In the C Final, Mark Phillips had a walk in the park, winning both legs. Luke took 2nd place in both legs, with Phil 3rd. Kevin continued to have breakage problems with his car, leaving him to come 4th, and John Guiver not even managing to start either leg brought up the rear. This meant that Luke secured third place in F3, but gave Stephen Williams 2nd place, by a single point, even though Stephen wasn't racing tonight!

And of course well done to everyone, for what has been a fun and exciting Championship Series, and some of the closest finishes we've ever seen.

So, just to conclude - who won what.....

Formula 1 Points

1
John Fillingham 503

2

Dan Wooster

  Formula 3 Points

Championship

Just one more week of the championship to go now, and there are still battles for placings going on.

In F3, Mark Philips clearly has the win, but with Luke Overson and Stephen Williams only one point apart, it will all come down to next week's result for 2nd place.

F2 is looking like a clean sweep for Simon Philips, but with only one point between Tom and Charlie, wnd place is too close to call.

F1 has always looked like John Fillingham's, but Dan Wooster is now in with a shout, provided he can beat John next week that is - good luck with that one! Whatever happens though, Nathan is assured of his almost mythical 3rd place again.

Where is everyone.....?

I know it's getting close to the end of the year, but numbers tonight were down on our normal turnout - so come on get your gear out and come along for some fun!

Championship

That's 6 rounds completed now, and while not everyone has completed 5 rounds, here's the top 3 drivers in each formula, so far!

Formula 1

1
Nathan Maycock

2

Dave Irving

3
Colin Williams
  Formula 2

1
Charlie Ware

2
Tom Marchant

3
Neil Overson
  Formula 3

1
Luke Overson

2
Mark Phillips

3
Stephen Williams

But it's not over yet, and you can see that in reality, John Fillingham and Dan Wooster are going to take P1and P2 in F1, while Simon Philips and Dan Mayes are both in with a shot for P1 and P2 in F2, and the postions in F3 could still change between Luke, Mark and Stephen, with Lee Henson still having a long shot.

Just because we are running a championship series, doesn't mean that anything changes in terms of racing and wveryone is welcome, so come on!!!

 9th November 2007

Slightly reduced numbers tonight, but still lots of enjoyable racing, although Charlie seemed plagued by an unreasonable number of breakages this week!

It's still a bit early to see who's going to do the best in the championship, and with three weeks of racing still to go, it's still all up for grabs - well apart from John's P1 of course

No Dan this week, but Paul Upton came along to join in the fun, and certainly gave John a run for his money, especially when both their Cylone's were weighted down to almost 1600g. With Stuart having to disappear before the finals, that left Dave, Nathan and I to argue over 3rd place - I will still be grinning next Friday!

The B Final was frightening to watch, with all of these drivers very evenly matched and seemingly using the car in front as a brake! Simon Philips took the 1st leg from Dan Mayes, but the 2nd leg was even closer and really Tom should have won that one, but I think he was put off by Dan's "pink love rocket"!!

The C Final was slightly more sedate, but John and Kevin broke their cars in the 1st leg, leaving Neil Overson a relatively easy win, although Stephen Williams and Simon Webb, kept him "honest".

The D final saw a new driver to the Club take his inaugural run and claim 2nd place overall - welcome Simon Watson - yes another Simon!!  With two straight wins though, Luke claimed overall win.

Results

With Track 20 being a much more flowing track than last week, the "heavy" cars of last weeks A finalists weren't quite as disadvantaged as they thought they were going to be. John set a cracking pace in qualifying, although Dan was close behind and Nathan qualified in 3rd.

Nathan 3rd? - I hear you say, well, that's a surprise from Mr 3rd_a_lot!
Ah, but the real shock was that Nathan actually had to add "success ballast" to his car - even though it was only 5 grams - it must have just been that little extra that allowed me to beat him in leg 2 - sorry Nathan, couldn't resist!!

The A finals still turned out to be a bit of a two horse race, but John and Dan were very close throughout both legs, with John winning the 1st and Dan the 2nd, leaving Stuart, Nathan and me to squabble over the remaining places.

In the B final, it has to be said that all these drivers are very close - which unfortunately means there can be a tendency to "trip over" each other - and that's exactly what happened at the start of each leg. By the end, Charlie took the overall win, with Simon close behind and Neil dropping to 3rd from pole.

The C final was even closer, with the top three drivers all finishing on the same points, which was a lucky break for John Guiver, who after crashing out in the 2nd lag, still managed to take the overall win based on starting position.*
* Having checked the results, it is clear that Andrew Nicholls lost at least 6 laps due to problems with the timing loop, so when this is taken into account, Andrew just "steals" the overall win from John - sorry John!

The D final saw problems for most drivers, with Phil suffering some sort of interference, Lee losing his cells and Luke not starting leg 2 - all of which left Stephen to win both legs and take overall 1st.

It doesn't get much more exciting than this - or does it? Well, Mike Smith has decided to dust off his thumbs and get a car out on the track - so provided he can find his pinions, he'll be out there next week!

Autumn Championship

After some discussion, it's been decided to try something a little different for the "A" finalists to try and even up the racing a bit and give everyone more of a chance to win, making a closer championship and adding to the excitement!

These new rules will only affect the four/five fastest drivers each week and are based on the principles of the British Touring Car Championship, by adding "success ballast" to the fastest cars. It goes like this:

Round 1:
After qualifying, the top five fastest cars are weighed and success ballast added so each car meets their respective minimum weights:

1st Place - FTQ - minimum weight 1600g
2nd Place - minimum weight 1575g
3rd Place - minimum weight 1550g
4th Place - minimum weight 1525g
5th Place - minimum weight 1500g
6th Place (if appropriate) - any weight they can achieve!

Round 2:
The top five championship leaders have to qualify with their respective minimum weights as above.

After qualifying, the success ballast will be readjusted according to the qualifying positions of the top 5 drivers, regardless of whether or not these cars were running success ballast during qualifying. If any of the top 5 drivers from round 1 qualify below P5, all extra weights can be taken off their car and they will run the finals at any weight they can achieve. Round 3 then uses the same routine as round 2 and so on until the end of the series.

It may sound a bit complicated, but it was clear tonight that running this way made the A Final a lot closer, and certainly very exciting.

Just wanted to put a big public "Thank You" up for Nathan, who has made another 12 corner pieces, so we now have enough for any track layout we choose, especially using the 45's that make up the fast sweeping corners!

Autumn 2007 Championship Series

Yes, it's that time again and the opportunity awaits all those who want to increase their "ability" level over the course of the series. The Autumn Championship will start on Friday 12th October, running for 8 weeks until Friday 30th November. Best 5 results will count towards your final score, so you can drop your worst 3 runs, or miss 3 weeks!

The format of racing will be the same as every Friday, with 2 x 3 minute qualifiers and 2 x 5 minute finals - the aggregate of which will determine your points for that week. Don't forget that this will be for Stock motors only and either treaded rubber tyres, or the V-Tec 24r control tyre, with additive (LRP Top Grip Carpet - Part number LRP65011, or equivalent).

It doesn’t matter if you can’t complete the 5 rounds, everyone can still come and race – even though the Championship is running, race nights are still open to everyone and you’ll always be racing in your normal heat because we still want the evening to be fun.

At the end of the series, there will be winners for each of F1, F2 and F3 - so everyone has the chance of a trophy.

Formula’s

We will be using the same formula’s we used for the Spring series - check out the link below to see who's where:

Club Formula's >>

The Championship is a good opportunity to show how well your driving has improved during the year, and everyone's "ability" levels will be re-assessed during the series which may influence where you start in the qualifying heats on a Friday. It will also be an opportunity to move up a formula if you do well enough!

 7th September 2007

Just where did August go? Sorry I haven't had time to update the site over the past few weeks, but all the historical results and this weeks results have now been updated:

Stock and Super Stock?

One of the things that's happened over the past few weeks is that we have now moved away from Super Stock again. Amazing really, after all the hype and then the agonising over "should we, shouldn't we?", the general feeling was that there was not a huge advantage over stock on our track and that we want to keep everything as evenly matched as possible. So that's it, we stick with Stock only - at least for now!

 20th July 2007

Stock and Super Stock?

Having started last week, a few drivers had another go with just the 19T "super stock" motor this week. It does give the cars more power, but not that much advantage over the stock motors in terms of total laps. You can see the results here:

Race Results >>

I think we'll keep running the super stock's for a bit longer to see how it goes, so if you have one and fancy trying it, then go ahead!

Looking for a New Bodyshell?

There are plenty of people spraying up shells, but Neil Overson came across"Blakey Designs" and I think Charlie Ware may also have one of his shells. I've just ordered three for me and the boys, so you can see them when they arrive. If you want take a look beforehand though, here's the web site:

Blakey Designs >>

 13th July 2007

Run what you brung...!

Well it was a bit like that tonight, as John and Nathan had decided to bolt modified motors into their cars, which lead to Stuart putting in a mod, and Dave and I sticking 19 turn motors in our cars. Here's what was run:

John Fillingham 12 Triple (Modified)
Nathan Maycock 12 Triple (Modified)
Stuart Ward 13 Double (Modified)
Dave Irving 19 Single (Super Stock)
Colin Williams 19 Single (Super Stock)

It certainly made for some interesting and in some cases leery runs, but perhaps surprisingly, it didn't give the mod guys a lot more laps. In fact with Dan Wooster running his normal stock motor, John didn't look to be putting in laps much faster than he did last week with a stock motor in.

The 19T motors were very interesting in that they were a little faster than the stocks, especially out of the corners, but not so fast that the cars were very difficult to control. The motors also came off fairly cool at the end of a 5 minute run and gearing up didn't seem to improve the lap times, so this may be a good way of extending the life of the motors. On the down side, the faster motors were certainly heavier on tyres, and to some extent on breakages!

If anyone else wants to try a 19T motor next week, then feel free and we'll see how these go compared to the stock motors.

 29th June 2007

End of Series....

....and Congratulations to John Fillingham who has now won four Championships in succession!

And of course well done to everyone, for what has been a fun and exciting Championship Series, and some of the closest finishes we've ever seen.

So, down to business - who won what.....

Formula 1 Points

1
John Fillingham 505

2

Nathan Maycock

491

3
Dan Wooster 491
  Formula 2 Points

1

2

3
Neil Overson 483
  Formula 3 Points

1
Charlie Ware 505

2
Liam Snaith 490

3
Stephen Williams 486

We've got trophies on order for the top three in each Formula, hopefully we'll present these next week.

However, I think Nathan deserves a special mention here for keeping his cool right up to the last race, to hold off Dan for his first ever 2nd place - way to go!

Other drives of note belong to Dan Mayes, for some really good drives, giving him a clear win in F2, but also Simon Phillips in F2, who having changed his car now seems to be improving week on week.

In F3, we already mentioned Charlie's performance last week, but also we've seen some really improved racing from both Stephen Williams and Sam Montgomery-Law - keep it up guys!

I'd also like to mention some of the newcomers who arrived during the Series: John, Jamie and Daniel Guiver and Phil Spencer and Lee Henson, all of who are now getting to grips with our track - hope you've enjoyed it so far.

 22nd June 2007

With just one more week of the Spring Series left to go now, all of the final placings are going to come right down to the wire!

In F1, Nathan is looking dangerously close to getting his coveted 2nd place, but being on equal points with Dan, anything could happen next week!

In F2, Neil and Chris are also on equal points, challenging for second and third, and it's the same story in F3, with Stephen and Liam both on equal points for second and third. I've not seen a finish as close as this since we started running championships - can't wait for next week!

"What a Result from the Youngster...."

Charlie Ware had an absolutely brilliant night tonight, not only qualifying in the A Final, but then driving the wheels off his car to keep up with the regular A Finalists. It was only a few small mistakes which stopped him getting a better result. Hmmm, going to have to watch him, or he'll be after my "F1" .

Control Tyres

If you want a set of the new Slick Control Tyres, MicroTech Racing have given the Club a discount on these and the Committee have also agreed to further supplement this and pass on a significantly reduced price to all our Club Members.

A set (4) of these wheels/tyres (VTEC 24r's) will cost you just £17.50 compared with the normal retail price of £25. If you need any, see Colin on Friday night.

Personal Transponders

We still have some PT’s for sale at £55 each if you want to stop having the hassle of collecting a handout transponder from Race Control each time you run!

Again, see Colin if you are interested on a Friday night.

 15th June 2007

Well a mixture of fortunes tonight for some people, and while I am pleased with my highest ever finish in an "A" final, it was a shame to see some of the other drivers, like Tom Marchant struggling, and a new driver to the Club, Jamie Guiver, suffering from problems with his motor and speedo.

On the positive side John, refreshed and back from his Honeymoon, took a clean win in the A final, and has pretty much got the Championship title sewn up, with four maximum point results - just one more for a full house! In F2, Dan Mayes' result in the A final has put him in a strong 1st position for F2, but Neil Overson can still catch him, so it looks like being down to the wire. In F3, Charlie Ware looks like taking a clean sweep, with 4 maximum point results so far, he just needs one more to be "untouchable"!

Just two more weeks to go.......

Results

Well, the change of grip tonight with slicks using additive was quite remarkable and from talking to a number of drivers, it made the whole night a lot more enjoyable with the focus on racing, rather than simply trying to control the car around the track!

Race Results >>

Spring 2007 Championship Series

Because we've changed the ruling on allowing additive to be used, it only seemed right to restart the Championship Series with all the rounds to the same standard. So, last weeks round will be ignored and the Series will begin again at Round 1, next Friday and run until the 29th June - still best 5 rounds from 8.

Track Records

Someone was asking a little while ago about track records, so I've decided that we'll try and start collecting them, so here we go:

Track
Fastest Lap
Most Laps

John Fillingham
8.41 seconds

04/05/07
John Fillingham
34 / 303.56s

04/05/07

It was a close run thing between John and Paul Upton for fastest lap and between John and Stuart for most number of laps, but John has now set the standard for this particular track!

 30th April 2007

Tyre Ruling

OK after much discussion with Colin and reading the comments on RC Racechat we have decided the following on tyres.

We WILL ALLOW the use of additive. LRP Top Grip Carpet (Part number LRP65011) or the Nosram equivalent (sorry I don’t have the part number at the moment). Tyres will remain either the Carpet Dragon or the LRP Vtec 24R (part number LRP65051) still available from the club at a reduced rate.

These are the only tyres/additives allowed. Please remember when using additive it MUST be removed from the tyre BEFORE placing the car on the track.

This rule change has been brought about in order to bring a level playing field to the club once again, and hopefully bring the enjoyment back to the club that has been lacking in the last few weeks.

In the spirit of fair play, we have also decided that a rule change once the series has started in not fair. Hence the Spring Series will be re-started on Friday the 11th of May with the results from last week not counting. This will hopefully give people enough time to get slick and additive sorted out and give this Friday as a setup meeting before we re-start the series.

I hope that this is clear.

If anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me either by email or my number is on the club site.

Best regards

Dave Irving

KMCC Chairman

Spring 2007 Championship Series

Tonight saw the 1st round of the Spring Championship, with the new tyre rules in place. This is certainly causing some drivers problems trying to get to grips (literally!!) with the slicks, although some people seem to have found good set-up's and modified their driving styles to suit. I think we are going to see some different drivers in the top 10 this time around!

The format of racing will be the same as every Friday, with 2 x 3 minute qualifiers and 2 x 5 minute finals - the aggregate of which will determine your points for that week.
It doesn’t matter if you can’t complete the 5 rounds, everyone can still come and race – even though the Championship is running, race nights are still open to everyone and you’ll always be racing in your normal heat because we still want the evening to be fun.

Tyre’s

As for normal Friday meetings, standard Club rules apply - stock motors and either treaded rubber tyres, or the new VTEC 24R control tyre. No additives will be allowed, although you can use “baby wipes” All cars should run a minimum ride height (including the shell) of 5mm to try and avoid damaging the carpet. Cars may be scrutineered during the series, just to check everyone is playing fair!

Formula’s

We will be using the formula’s which were decided after the end of 2006 Championships - click on the link below if you want to know which Formula you are in.

2007 Formula's >>

At the end of the series, there will be winners for each of F1, F2 and F3 - so everyone has the chance of a trophy.

Races will still be sorted based on your “ability” as we normally do and your ability will be automatically updated during the series based on your performance – so this is your chance to change which qualifiers you usually run in on a Friday!

Personal Transponders

We still have some PT’s for sale at £55 each if you want to stop having the hassle of collecting a handout transponder from Race Control each time you run!

See Colin if you are interested on a race night.

Slick Tyre - Better or Worse?

Well it was a very interesting night tonight, with a number of drivers trying the new slick tyres - without additive - and others using Carpet Dragons! It certainly makes the first couple of laps a bit more challenging as you start to get some heat into the tyres - although some drivers had clearly got their setup right with grip on slicks right from the start line. John Fillingham posted two 40 lap finals, which we haven't seen on any of our track layouts for a long time, so overall, I'd have to say "better" - but only if you can control the initial sliding!

New Tyre Ruling

Moving on from my comments of 2 weeks ago, we have now had a few weeks of testing and been talking to as many drivers as we could, so the Committee have come to a view regarding a change to our existing tyre rule.

It hasn't been an easy decision, because we realise from talking to you all, that there is quite a mixture of views and feelings out there about the use of slicks and additive, and it became clear early on that no matter what we decided, it wouldn't suit everyone.

So, that has left us with trying to make a decision which fits around the spirit of the type of racing we believe the Club is trying to create, which is about fun for the experienced drivers, and encouraging younger drivers to join the sport. We have always tried to keep rules to the minimum, whilst keeping the racing close by controlling motor and tyre choice in an attempt to keep costs down for everyone.

OK, so what are the new Rules?

Tyres for Indoor Carpet Racing - Drivers have the choice of using any Treaded Rubber tyre, with any insert and wheel, or a Control Slick tyre - LRP VTEC 24r - which should be the pre-glued variant (LRP65051).

No mini-pins, rally blocks, or foam tyres are to be used.

No additive is allowed.

"Baby Wipes" can be used to clean tyres in-between races.

Tyre Warmers are not allowed.

From our testing, we feel that the pre-glued Vtec 24r, when wiped over with a "baby wipe" before a race, gives a level of grip equivalent to Schumacher Carpet Daragon's and this allows both type of tyres to be raced against each other in a fair race, and gives drivers the choice regarding which tyre they wish to run. These pre-glued tyres are also a good cost effective alternative to Carpet Dragon's when you add up the cost of tyre, insert and wheel.

We have decided not to allow additive for a number of reasons, which are too lengthy/boring to go into here, but suffice to say that we felt everyone needed to be in agreement over the use of this in order for us to make the change, and this wasn't the case. If you want to know more, talk to one of the Committe and we'll happilly explain all the views.

Do you want to change to Control Slicks?

OK, having said we are making a change to the rules, we know that many of you will want to give the new slick control tyre a try! To help make this easier on your pocket, MicroTech Racing have very generously agreed to give the Club a discount, and the Committee have also agreed to further supplement this and pass on a significantly reduced price to all our Club Members. We also have two sets of tyres that we intend to keep as loan tyres for any new drivers, or those who simply want to try them before they buy.

The Web price to buy a full set of VTEC 24r's from Microtech is £23.76 plus P+P, and we expect to be able to pass on savings to our Club Members of at least £6 a set, if not more. So, if you want a set of these new tyres, see Colin next Friday.

Change of Tyre Rule?

We had a little play tonight with slick rubber tyres and some carpet additive, and it clearly changes how your car handles - although that wasn't the main reason for testing. The problem is that we have been seeing a lot of Carpet Dragons getting ripped around the rim, which is starting to get a bit expensive. We know that slicks will last longer as they wear less, but grip is reduced if we don't allow additive - hence the testing. As far as we can tell, the additive rubbing off onto the carpet didn't affect anyone running Dragons, and the additive we used didn't smell too strongly, although the safety information was a bit "scary"!

Certainly using the slicks with additive improved lap times by betwen 0.3 and 0.5 seconds compared with Dragon's run on the same car, but without additive the car is just too hard to handle for the first few laps.

I certainly don't think those who tried the new tyres want to go back to Dragons again, so I guess it's now a case of looking at the best additive to use then get the committee to make a decision!

....maybe I'll try tyres warmers next week and see if they work as well as additive...

 23rd February 2007

It was nice to see a couple of new faces last night - who had travelled over from Loughborough - hope you enjoyed the evening!

We've been discussing tyres over on RC RaceChat, and we are going to see how slick tyres perform. We have bought two sets of V-TEC 24 preglued wheels/tyres, so if you want to give them a try, see Dave or Colin next Friday.

 2nd February 2007

It was one of those nights tonight, where a lot of drivers seemed to suffer from one problem or another, with at least one driver (Liam) not even getting a run in after free practice!

There was still some great racing though, and a number of drivers putting in really fast lap times. It is wonderful to watch new racers as well, with our youngest racer, Ryan Webb, who may not get quick lap times, but always has a smile on his face, and our first female driver for some time, Tamsen Ziegler, clearly enjoying herself and discovering it's not quite as easy as it looks to get the car around the track.

Oh well, off to the spares shop now to get back running next week........
