End of another Year......

Well, that's it for another year of racing at KMCC. It's been a good year for the Club, with a steady stream of members racing each week. We've seen a number of new members during the year, and I hope you've all enjoyed your first year of racing. We've also said goodbye to one or two drivers and had a couple of drivers return to racing after a while away.

It's been a mixed year for me, I feel that I've improved a bit at the Club and whether that's down to a new car, or just me getting better from practice I'm not sure. But I had a disappointing run in the STCC, which I've put down to a combination of inexperience outdoors and some bad luck with a ton of "interference" problems at some of the tracks.

If you've got any reflections, or stories from the year that you would like to share, why not drop me a line at the email address at the bottom of the page, or start a thread on our Club Forum at RC RaceChat?

Racing in 2007

Don't forget, we start racing again on Friday 5th January - so bring along those new bits 'n' pieces you get for Christmas and try them out - I know it will be aluminium steering knuckles for me!

We hope you all have a really enjoyable Christmas and a Happy and Successful New Year.

Tonight's meeting brought the Autumn Championship to a conclusion, and it was a closely fought battle, particularly in F2 and F3, although it was clear in F1 that John had the win sewn up after the first 5 rounds!

So, here are the top positions, each of which will receive a trophy next week.

  Most Improved Junior - 2006
    Liam Snaith

Once again this year, we decided to award a "Most Improved Junior" trophy, which is a way of recognising the hard work and perseverance that our younger drivers bring to the Club. Once again, it was a difficult choice, however on balance we decided that the award should go to Liam Snaith - so well done!

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the championship - we hope you enjoyed it.

Autumn 2006 Championship Series

Well, 5 rounds into the Championship now, and already we have an overall winner! With 5 straight wins and a maximum of 505 points, John Fillingham can't be beaten. So, what about the runners up?

F1, has Dan and Elliott fighting for 2nd place at the moment, with Stuart still in with a shout of a top 3 place.

F2, Tom Marchant and Simon Phillips are now neck and neck for 1st position with Kevin flying up into 3rd place.

F3, with still quite a few drivers to complete the 5 rounds, Neil has the overall lead, but he's going to have to watch Andrew who is closing quickly and with Peter, Liam and Charlie all challenging for 3rd, it's going to be close!

 27th October 2006

After 3 rounds of the Autumn Championship, John Fillingham has run a clean sweep to get maximum points - can anyone catch him? Well after tonight's racing, it's clear that Dan and Elliott are not just going to sit back and let John run on unchallenged, but it's going to take both a combination of skill and a lack of bad luck out on the track!

In Formula 2, Tom Marchant is looking comfortable at the moment, but it's not going to take much for any of the F2 drivers to up their form a bit and really challenge him.

In F3, Neil Overson has a comfortable lead at the moment, but there are a few drivers who are clearly going to be chasing him hard over the coming weeks.

With 5 rounds to go there's still plenty of time for positions to change!

Autumn 2006 Championship Series

Don't forget, the Championship Series starts next Friday - so now's a good time to get back into racing if you haven't been for a while.

Personal Transponders

Most of the regular racers at the Club now use Personal Transponders (PT's), which means you can check your lap times from the practice session, but most importantly, you don't have to worry about collecting and fitting a hand out before each race! Unfortunatley they are not cheap items of electronics, costing £60 each if bought direct from the UK supplier. However, as a Club, we are willing to buy them in "bulk" and pass on that discount to our members, so we will sell them onto you at £55 each.

We have also have some servo "Y" leads for anyone who doesn't have a 3rd channel or BEC socket to plug the transponder into. We are selling these for £4 each to Club members.

At the moment, we only have one PT left, which is on "hold" for one of our drivers, but if you are interested in owning one of these, see Colin and we will buy some more. If it helps, then you can pay by installments, so how about it - maybe an early Christmas present?

 29th September 2006

Oh well, call it a one hit wonder, or a flash in the pan, but I couldn't even get into the A Final this week, let alone onto pole, and I can't even blame anyone else! Still I musn't grumble, with a pole in the B Final, which I managed to convert to an overall win I'm still very pleased.

Race Results >>

It was nice to see a few faces who haven't been around for a while back at the Club tonight. Clearly, some drivers have been off doing various outdoor racing championships during the summer. Congratulations must go the Elliott Harper for winning the Under 14's BRCA Juniors at Ashby in August, as well as him winning the 2006 BRCA Touring Car Champs in 19T F2 class. A special mention must also go to Charlie Ware for his 2nd place in the B Final of the Under 12's BRCA Juniors, coming a close 2nd to one of our old Club members, Robert Hodgson.

Even though Autumn is now well on the way, there is still some outdoor racing going on, and a few of us will be going to the final round of the STCC at Ipswich next weekend - weather permitting!

Autumn 2006 Championship Series

Talking of taking part in Championships, a few people have been asking when the Autumn series is going to start, so here you go, it will start on Friday 13th October, running for 8 weeks until Friday 1st December. Best 5 results will count towards your final score, so you can drop your worst 3 runs, or miss 3 weeks!

It doesn’t matter if you can’t complete the 5 rounds, everyone can still come and race. Even though the Championship is running, race nights are still just the same as a normal Friday meeting, it's only the points scored that are different.

At the end of the series, there will be winners for each of F1, F2 and F3 - so everyone has the chance of a trophy.

Formula’s

We will be using the formula’s which were reviewes after the end of Spring Championship - check out the link below to see who's where:

Club formula's >>

The Championship is a good opportunity to show how well your driving has improved during the year, and everyone's "ability" levels will be re-assessed during the series which may influence where you start in the qualifying heats on a Friday. It will also be an opportunity to move up a formula if you do well enough!

Don't forget, altough the Championship is intended to generate a bit of competition within the Club, we still want racing to be a fun activity, so don't take it too seriously when someone half you age (or less in my case) makes you look like you're driving backwards!

 22nd September 2006

Well, it's not often that I get a chance to "applaud" myself, but I must admit that qualifying on pole in the A Final for the first time ever does allow me to crow just a little - even if it was a week were most of the top drivers were off doing other things! Unfortunately, I couldn't convert it into a win, and Rob managed to shove past me and stay ahead twice (I'm not bitter - honest!!!! )

It was also great to see Neil and Tom qualify in the A Final - a 1st for Neil, shame Tom broke his diff - again!

Both legs of the B Final were exciting as well, with Simon, Liam and Andrew all so close that the smallest of mistakes counted. In the end, Simon managed to finish ahead in both legs to take the overall win. In the C Final, Stephen took the first leg win fairly easily when Paul pulled out with problems, and in a close second leg, Paul took the win, but it didn't stop Stephen taking the overall win.

Well done to everyone for a great night's racing and thanks for all helping to pack away - it is appreciated.

 15th September 2006

Even though the numbers might be slightly lower than usual at the moment, it doesn't stop there being some very close and exciting racing. In particular, the A final over the past couple of weeks has seen Rob Oliver now challenging hard with his new X-Ray and winning both legs on the 8th - which must be a first for him. John is starting to get to grips now with his new Yokomo, and this week he ran off with the wins again.

In the lower finals, there is plenty of competition, with everyone trying hard to reach the B final, and a few trying too hard! You have to keep the car together to win - you know who I mean (Tom)!

Anyway, check out the updated results for the past two weeks for yourself:

It's always entertaining to watch drivers go "head to head" no matter what ability level, but this week saw some amazing racing between John and Dan in the 2nd leg of the A final (even though Dan forgot to put in his transponder - Doh!). I always find it incredible that you can get so close but still manage not to hit the car in-front - it just shows what you can achieve when you reach that level of car control.

"Formula" Update

We would normally only change the formula gradings at the end of the year, but as there have been a number of new drivers join the Club and others leave, the F2 group is looking a bit diminished. Therefore, the top three drivers from F3 will be boosted up to F2 now and we will review the gradings again at the end of the year, after the Autumn Series.

Changes to gradings are:

Colin Williams
From F2 to F1
Tom Marchant From F3 to F2
Chris Mariani From F3 to F2
Stuart Ward From F3 to F2

NB - the overall results are here for round 7, but the formula results only reflect the positions after round 6 - this will be updated fully at the end of round 8 next week.

 12th May 2006

Spring 2006 Championship Series

Six rounds into the eight round series now, and you can start to see who are the contendors for the lead, as a number of drivers have now completed the minimum 5 rounds to count.

F1 is of course being led by the "usual suspects" of John and Dan, with Nathan in third, with Elliott languishing low in the table as he hasn't got 5 weeks in yet.

F2 is a bit under subscribed in this series, and only two drivers have completed 5 rounds so far, with Colin and Simon Williams in 1st and 2nd, although there's still time for Daniel Mayes, Kevin Howard, Simon Philips and Sam Hunt to make a last minute run.

F3 is probably the most closely contested formula, with Tom Marchant and Chris Mariani only 2 points apart and Peter Jeeves, Stuart Ward and Charlie Ware still in contention. There is also Neil Overson and Paul Kirkup to consider as they have been putting in some good runs as well!

The next two weeks should prove to be quite exciting as the series draws to a close....

 5th May 2006

Oh, what a night........

......no, not the Frankie Valli song, but the epic disaster I suffered tonight! After being "T-boned" in the 1st round of qualifying to destroy my servo case and then a battery bar snapping off in round 2, it meant I qualified 3rd in the D-final! Still, that's racing for you, and it wasn't just me - Stuart Ward also qualified in the D-Final, so we made a nuisance of ourselves to the other drivers as we tried to weave our way through other lapped cars!

One good thing about racing is that there's always next week!

South-Midland Touring Car Challenge 2006 (SMTCC)

Milton Keynes and Bedworth RC Clubs have put together a four-round Inter-club Challenge for the Summer 2006 calendar. It is open to any driver and any club can put a team together. This year, all the races will be at the Bedworth track, because MK are having their new track constructed, and Kettering put together a small team for Round 1 yesterday.

The individual results for Kettering drivers were;

Stock
Paul Upton 2nd - A Final
Colin Williams 8th - B Final
Simon Williams 4th - C Final

19T
Elliot Harper 2nd - A Final

Dave Irving

5th - A Final
Richard White 7th - A Final

More detailed results can be found on the MK website:

SMTCC Round 1 results >>

After Round 1 the club championship looks like this;

MK:
Stock - 1127 Super Stock - 1176 Total - 2303
Bedworth:
Stock - 1148 Super Stock - 1145 Total - 2293
Kettering:
Stock - 812 Super Stock - 868 Total - 1680

As you can see, we are lagging behind a bit, mainly because we only had 6 drivers and need at least eight in order to be even slightly competitive. So, if anyone is interested in having a bit of outdoor fun during the Summer, check out the MK , or the Bedworth website for more details. The Bedworth track is less than an hours drive away and is a good track to race on, even if you haven't raced outdoor before!

Spring 2006 Championship Series

Just an early reminder, that the Spring 2006 Club Championship will start on Friday 31st March, running for 8 weeks until Friday 26th May. Best 5 results will count towards your final score, so you can drop your worst 3 runs, or miss 3 weeks!

The format of racing will be the same as every Friday, with 2 x 3 minute qualifiers and 2 x 5 minute finals - the aggregate of which will determine your points for that week.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t complete the 5 rounds, everyone can still come and race – even though the Championship is running, race nights are still open to everyone and you’ll always be racing in your normal heat because we still want the evening to be fun.

Just as for normal Friday meetings, standard Club rules apply - stock motors only and treaded rubber tyres. All cars should run a minimum ride height (including the shell) of 5mm to try and avoid damaging the carpet. Cars may be scrutineered during the series, just to check everyone is playing fair!

Formula’s

We will be using the formula’s which were decided after the end of 2005 Championships - check out the link below to see who's where:

Club formula's >>

At the end of the series, there will be winners for each of F1, F2 and F3 - so everyone has the chance of a trophy.

Races will still be sorted based on your “ability” as we normally do and your ability will be automatically updated during the series based on your performance – so this is your chance to change which qualifiers you usually run in on a Friday!

Personal Transponders

We still have a couple of PT’s for sale at £55 each if you want to stop having the hassle of collecting a handout transponder from Race Control each time you run!

See Colin if you are interested.

A slightly different layout to track 14 tonight made for a fast track, with a "killer" chicane just before the back straight! There was still plenty of quick laps though and plenty of close racing - check out the results below:

Great night's racing tonight - even though "I was robbed" in the finals! Track 12 is definately one of my favourites - nice and flowing, but you still have to be careful on some of the corners.

Don't forget, your Club and BRCA membership fees are now due. BRCA membership has increased to £12 for 2006, but we have reduced the Club membership to just £3, so that it only costs £15, the same as 2005, to renew your Club & BRCA membership.

Happy New Year!

We hope you have all had a great Christmas and are now looking forward to a new year of racing at KMCC.

Did you know that last year, a few Kettering drivers took part in the Southern Touring Clubman's Championship, which runs at various tracks in the South East of England, and we came 8th overall out of 33 Clubs! Individually, Dan Wooster came 5th in Modified, Paul Upton came 1st in 19T and Tony Spooner came 14th in 27T Stock.

A few more drivers are planning to take part in 2006, so if you want to know more, click on the STCC icon on the right of this page, or see Mike on a Club night.
